SECME Summer Institute

The SECME Summer Institute is designed to provide an opportunity for K-16 educators, administrators, parents, and students to receive innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professional development.

Pioneer Student Leadership Academy
July 5-19, 2005

The Pioneer Leadership Academy is a two-week residential program dedicated to the development of a diverse, technologically literate 21 st century workforce. Participants will receive hands-on experience in conference and event planning; attend workshops on Leadership, Conflict Resolution, Team Building, Time Management, Customer Service, Effective Communications, Networking, Logistics, and more. Pioneer Leadership participants produce a daily conference newsletter and a video conference that is aired on local public television stations.

Teacher/Counselor Academy
July 10-21, 2005

SECME’s nationally recognized two-week residential Teacher/Counselor Academy enables educators to acquire and evaluate best practices, learn state-of-the art-teaching strategies, infuse technology in their classrooms and curricula, and interact with teaching colleagues and university and industry members. Exciting new standards-based content in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines is offered to educators from more than 100 school districts. Participants engage in interactive, inquiry-based curriculum enrichments, team up for engineering-design competitions, take part in laboratory demonstrations, and see cutting-edge research tools and techniques. Participants may earn three (3) hours of graduate or continuing education credit.

Empowering Parents To Excel At Parenting (EP)²
July 13-19, 2005

The (EP) ² program is a seven-day residential program that provides personal and professional development for parents. Participants will experience a variety of hands-on activities and competitions enabling them to return home with a better understanding of their child’s academic routine. Its goal is to equip parents to be more effective “Champions, Coaches, and Cheerleaders” for their children’s academic success enabling them to better support and assist their children in making sound educational and career choices.

 

Leadership Academy —Administrators
July 14-19, 2005

The Leadership Academy is an intensive five-day residential training and development program designed for school and district-level leaders and administrators. Modules are presented by the nation’s foremost educational professionals and address the most pressing issues in education leadership today — Making “No Child Left Behind” work for your school; school reform; curriculum development; transformational leadership, and much more. In addition, NBPTS will offer site-based professional development to assist administrators in building learning communities.

 

Early College High School Symposium
July 14-19, 2005

ECHS school district leaders and higher education partners in ECHS initiatives nationwide will learn and share with one another in this intensive five-day symposium which focuses on the most prevalent concerns for opening/managing and sustaining an Early College High School. Topics include: Rigor & Remediation -- Making Early College Work for Our Student Populations; Policy Pitfalls: What's working and what's not in state policies; Blending High School & College: Innovative Models for Delivering Blended Curriculum; The Power of Place: Creating Non-traditional Learning Environments for ECHS; Using What You've Got -- Identifying Existing Programs and Funding to Support ECHS work; and more!

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Workshops
July 19-20, 2005

For Administrators:
Creating Site-Based National Board Professional Development while Building a Learning Community

This session will guide school principals and administrators to create a school-based reform for teacher and student centered professional development. These school leaders will develop a customized plan to initiate action-research and a high level of thinking on student-centered learning. Activities will include reviewing technology, accomplished teaching, instructional strategies and approaches to standards-based teaching and learning.

For Teachers and Candidate Support Providers:
National Board Candidate Support: Bringing Standards to Focus

This session, conducted by trained facilitators and National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), will help all educators and support providers understand standards–based professional development. Participants will become grounded in the national standards, portfolios, types of writing, and mentoring. Teachers will have the opportunity to share their approaches to the reflective process in National Board Certification ®.
